According to a recent writing in Payscale.com, the average salary for a Software Engineer or a web site developer in India is about Rs 368,064 per year. At today’s exchange rate of approximately Rs 60 for every dollar, that equals a yearly salary of approximately $6,134 dollars. What is more significant is that people who earn this much in a job in India as a Software Engineer or web site developer typically do not have more than 10 years’ experience at their profession.

Someone working as a freelancer on www.IndiaFreelancers.com, however, is able to earn this amount of money i.e. Rs 368,064 or ($6,134 US dollars) in one month, not in a year – since the employers on www.IndiaFreelancers.com pay in dollars. The best part about this is that the employers themselves are getting an excellent return for their expenditures since the programmers and developers in India are excellent. The skills that are highly sought after and the ones associated with the higher pay include Linux and Open Source programming as well as Word Press.

In a  recent article in the Times of India (August 18, 2015), it was noted that an increasing number of start-ups in India are employing India Institute of Technology (IIT) from as early in their school years as from their second and third years of IIT school.

It can be quite lucrative. A student from IIT Bombay earns as much as Rs 70,000 a month by just devoting only about 3 hours a day to developing software for a startup company. Other students who do not wish to work for someone else, simply create accounts on websites such as www.IndiaFreelancers.com and get work from employers as far away as the USA, England and Australia through that website.

In addition to websites such as www.IndiaFreelancers.com, there are a number of startups in India such as Bewakoof.com, Venturesity, Jabong, TouchKraft and VanityCube – just to name a few – all of which are employing IIT students in increasingly large numbers.

It is a win-win for both the companies and the students says Ashu Malhotra, head, human resources at Jabong, since “Companies gain by getting solutions while the students gain by getting exposure of two to four months”. With India’s growing IT presences in the world, freelancing and employment in the IT world are bound to continue to increase in India.

In a recent article in the Economic Times, from May of 2015, it was noted that the government in India will soon launch the Digital India Platform (abbreviated as “DIP”) which will be a place online which will provide freelancing opportunities to people in India – similar to the way that IndiaFreelancers.com provides freelancing opportunities to people in India.

The plan for the DIP is that the government plans to convert all of the current and future government documents into digital form. As such, the government will allow freelancers to bid on the work to convert all of these government documents into a digital format.

The requirements for someone to take part in this government DIP program is that the interested person needs to have, or apply for, a government Aadhaar number prior to visiting the government DIP website to apply for freelancerwork.

In creating this DIP program, “We are of course cautious about the confidentiality of government documents” said India IT Secretary, RS Sharma. It is for this reason that the government plans to parcel out the documents to the freelancers line by line.
