Freelancers and Women: Outstanding potential

Who was Rosalyn Yalow?  Janet Rowley? No idea? How about Marie Curie?  Rosalind Frankin? Give up? Well these are all women who made tremendous contributions to the world of science and through them, improved  all of our lives. Without these women we would not know today how to measure hormone levels in people (Rosalyn Yalow), or know how chromosomes cause a kind of leukemia known as Chronic Myelogenous Leukemia (Janet Rowley) or know anything about radiation (Marie Curie) or even know much about DNA itself (Rosalind Frankin).

What am I getting at? What I am getting at is that women have contributed greatly to human understanding and scientific growth. Without the women mentioned above – and many others whose achievements have not been as celebrated as the ones mentioned above – our lives would be much worse. All of our lives – men included of course – would be so much diminished if not for the brains and the intelligence of these wonderful women.

This is why I applaud very much the suggestions made last week by the Human Resource Development (HRD) minister Smriti Irani. Acting on minister Irani’s suggestions, on Tuesday April 5th, 2016  the University Grants Commission (UGC) made the decision to relax the criteria for women and for selected disabled candidates with at least a 40% disability to allow them more time in which to complete their MPhil and PhD degrees.

Women make up the other half of the human race. Without women none of us would have arrived on this earth and none of us would have had the nurturing, loving person in our lives which made our very lives possible. However, women in today’s world are capable of these noble things and more – much more. Women today can be that wonderful nurturing presences in our lives while at the same time help to discover how DNA is formed. They can give birth to us while at the same time become one of the most famous researchers in the world of radioactivity. In short, women can – and do – live to their potential every day. And we should help them to do so.

Under the new UGC criteria announced last Tuesday, women and those with more than a 40% disability will now be allowed an extra year to complete their MPhil degree and two extra years to submit their PhD theses. How wonderful! What this means is that women can now take some time off to have their children and still be able to come back and finish their degrees. This means that the Rosalyn Yalow of tomorrow, the Janet Rowley of the future will have the opportunity to give to the world the fruits of their excellent and wonderful minds.

We at IndiaFreelancers.com have been celebrating the keen and wonderful contributions which our women programmers and web developers give to the technical world for a long time. We have many Freelancers who are women and we celebrate their achievements every day.

In today’s Times of India paper, April 6, 2016, there is an article that an IT engineer from Kerala has been abducted in Libya by an unidentified militia. To our knowledge, according to the stories we have read, the 43 year old Regi Joseph of Koorachundu in the Kozhikode district was not doing anything political or wrong. He was working on IT. His project was to help implement a national citizen database. He was an infrastructure engineer living in Tripoli with his wife Shinuja who is a nurse and their three daughters. For goodness’ sake. An infrastructure IT engineer, a nurse and three young daughters. How much more innocent can you be? Yet he was abducted.

Events like these illustrate the perils and dangers of leaving home. We highlighted in a previous blog entry that many of our Indian countrymen are leaving our beloved India for distant places. They leave in search of a better life for themselves and their families – and the numbers are impressive. Every day Doctors, computer programmers, engineers and other professionals leave India in search of better opportunities for themselves and for their families elsewhere. As I mentioned in my previous blog post, government data show that there are about 2.8 million Indians working in Saudi Arabia, approximately 3.3 million Indians in America, about 1.2 million Indians in Canada and about 1.5 million Indians in the United Kingdom (see this wikipedia page for more details).

Why is this  information critical on this blog? Its critical because with websites such as IndiaFreelancers.com it is now possible to stay home in India and have the foreigners come to you! Every day on IndiaFreelancers.com hundreds of employers come to seek out computer programmers, developers, website specialists and database programmers. Every day computer experts – all top-notch in their areas of specialty – are sought after on IndiaFreelancers.com by employers from abroad. People come to IndiaFreelancers.com from America, Europe, Asia and Australia – to name but a few places.

The quality of our technological experts is starting to be strongly and well known throughout the world. That is why one of our India countrymen was hired to go to Libya to work on their IT project there in the first place – because our experts are good!

But now with IndiaFreelancers.com it is possible to stay home and have the foreigners come to you! They know how excellent is our quality here in India and they will come to IndiaFreelancers.com to find you. So please, think again before leaving home. IndiaFreelancers.com gives you the opportunity to stay home and be among your families and friends – and still make an outstanding income and living.

Freelancers: An Indian name for Google?

First we had Sundar Pichai of India as the new CEO of Google. What next? Well, the possibility that the next version of the popular Android mobile phone platform will have an Indian name. That’s what’s next!

India and Indians are, almost on a daily basis, making a splash on the world’s stage. Long gone are the days when India was considered a quiet, sleepy country. We are arriving and have arrived. The name or the new Android version may indeed have an Indian name – but apparently it has to start with the letter “N”.

What are our choices? Who knows. Some have suggested Nirmala or Neha Dupia or New Delhi. Of course, we will not know until all of the voting is completed, but the very fact that our own son is now chief of Google and that he has brought home to India the possibility of an Indian name on the next Android version is a sign of our arrival on the world’s stage.

India, and the excellent tech that comes from India, is slowly but surely becoming a world standard and a world’s admiration. Sundar Pichai and Satya Nadella did not become CEOs of some of the most important and recognizable companies world wide by chance. It is their India roots that have contributed to their prominence. These same India roots are on display every day in the high quality of the programmers and web developers on IndiaFreelancers.com. There is not a day that goes by when someone does not comment on the quality and excellence of our technological members of IndiaFreelancers.com. And well they should. All of our excellent and wonderful technological personnel on IndiaFreelancers.com have in their hearts the same India roots which propelled people like Sundar Pichai and Satya Nadella to the pinnacle of their careers.

So when you next think of and consider advising someone of where to go to find the best programmers and/or web developers. Remember that the excellent programmers and web developers on IndiaFreelancers.com may someday be the next CEO of a large American company – and may be bringing an important thing home to India like the next Android version – for an India name.

Freelancers and Medicine: What are Fixed Dose Combination Drugs?

March 22, 2016

Today I had eggs and toast for breakfast. I had my eggs on one side of my plate and the toast on the other side. Yet, if I were to go to McDonald’s and buy an “Egg McMuffin”, I could buy a sandwich with bread and eggs all in one. That is what is a Fixed Dose Combination (FDC) medicine.

Fixed Dose Combination (FDC) medicines are pills (usually a pill or a capsule) which take a few different medicines and put them all (typically two but it can sometimes be as many as three) into one pill. The convenience of this is that when you take that ONE pill, you are really taking as many as THREE pills at once, but they are all mashed into that one pill.

One would maybe think “how convenient.” Instead of taking one pill, then another and then another. All you need to do with an FDC pill is take ONE pill and you would have ALL THREE medicines in that ONE pill. How easy can that be? Right? Wrong.

The dangers to taking an FDC medicine is the AMOUNTS of each of the individual medicines inside of an FDC pill! An FDC CONTROLS FOR YOU how much of EACH of these medicines you will take. You have no choice. Its like the Egg McMuffin. You do not get to choose how much egg or how much muffin comes to you. It comes already made. The amounts of each of these two ingredients (the egg and the muffin) are fixed before you get your sandwich. Now, when we are dealing with sandwiches that may not be such a bad thing but when we are dealing with medicines that can be terrible. What if you need a little MORE of medicine “A” but a little LESS of medicine “B”? Well, if you take a medicine in which both medicine “A” and “B” are fixed in that one pill and you cannot change the amounts of each of the medicines in that one pill – you may be in trouble. The results can be a disaster. You might wind up taking MORE of medicine “A” than what you need or LESS of medicine “B” than what you need.

If your body needs different amount of different medicines you would be wiser to be a little more industrious, put in a little more effort and take the individual medicines individually. My mom used to say “the person who strives to do less work usually winds up working twice as hard” and I believe that this is what is happening with these FDC medicines. If you wish to work so little that you do not want to take the trouble to take two different pills (heaven forbid you might have to open your mouth twice and swallow two times!), you will maybe pay the price of having to work twice as hard to get over the problems you might have by taking too much or too little of a medicine in an FDC.

Why are we talking about this here today? Well, the Madras High Court today, March 23, 2016, banned 344 of these FDC medicines. If you wish to know which are the medicines which have been banned, you can find them at this link here. However the key is to take your time, take a little more effort and take each medicine that you need individually.

Now, how is all of this relevant to IndiaFreelancers.com? Well the reason it is relevant to our excellent and outstanding freelancers on IndiaFreelancers.com is because the future of medicine is in IT. More and more, medicine is going the way of programs and IT enhancements. CAT Scans, MRI Scans, Glucose Meters to test your blood sugar level, etc etc. Our world-class programmers on IndiaFreelancers.com would do well to keep an eye on the world of medicine. The next FDC that you may hear about, may be when someone is asking to hire you to make it easier for people to take their FDCs – and you will need to know what these medicines are if you wish to consider possibly accepting such a job.

Freelancers: Are tablet computers going away?

March 9, 2016

There are things which we look at and think that “they will not last”. When tablets were first introduced, this is what we thought. A regular desktop computer with a nice sized screen and a keyboard make sense. It is very easy to interact with the keyboard, the mouse and the computer on a desktop – not so easy with a tablet.

First of all, there is no easy keyboard. Yes you can have a “virtual” keyboard, but its not the same. Secondly, the virtual keyboard takes up some of the space which would normally be used to view whatever you are seeing on your screen. Then there is the issue of “How do you hold it?”. Tablets just do not seem to be easy to grasp. Do you put your fingers on the screen in order to hold it? Are you scared of dropping it? Have you dropped it?

For all of these reasons we feared that tablets might not remain in demand and, unfortunately, it is starting to seem as if we were right. The International Data Corporation, a global research firm, in December 2015 published the results of a study they conducted which indeed noted that “Despite a decline in overall tablet shipments worldwide, business use tablet segments are positioned to see steady growth.” Now to many who read this, the sentence where it says that “tablets segments are positioned to see a steady growth” would catch their eye. But to us, the part that says that “a decline in overall tablet shipments” is the part that catches our eye.

These are things to keep in mind if you are a programmer and/or website developer on IndiaFreelancers.com. As you write for and create programs, please make sure to remember to make them responsive. Remember to make them able to be viewed across all screens – mobile phones, tablets and desktop computers. Why? Well, because even if the tablet – as we now know it – may be in decline, there are millions of them around and people still use them. Thus, it makes sense to take them into account when you create programs or web sites.

Freelancers also pay traffic tolls

Think of the long lines that exist whenever there is a toll station on the road. Cars wait and wait to pay their tolls and the toll attendants sometimes even give the drivers paper tickets for each toll paid. Except for the rare driver who is on business and needs to report his expenses, why in the world would anyone need a paper receipt for a pay toll?

Well a young 19 year old man from Mumbai named Tapan Kane has invented a mobile phone app which goes a long way to attempting to solve this problem. As the saying goes, “there’s an app for that” and in this case – its true! Tapan Kane, has invented an app which he calls the Virtual Toll System (V-Toll App) which uses the GPS (Global Positioning Satellite) system to be able to tell when a car is approximately 500 meters and then 50 meters from the toll station.

When the car is 500 meters away from the toll station, the mobile phone app and the toll station communicate and a message is sent to the driver that a toll station is coming up and how much is needed to be paid. When the  car is 50 meters away from the toll station, the app now deducts the amount of the toll from the driver’s account and pays the toll. This means that the driver is able to go through the toll station, pay the toll and not even need to slow down. Think of the savings. Tapan has said that “Approximately 10 crore vehicles pass toll plazas annually, wasting 87600 crore litres of fuel, estimated at Rs. 54, 000 crore. The carbon dioxide released during this period adds up to 22,812 tonne, thus becoming a health hazard to commuters, toll booth operators and residents living alongside the highways.”

We at IndiaFreelancers.com applaud inventors and developers who create things which make life better for all of us – such as what Tapan Kane of Mumbai has done. It is this creativity from India which is making our country one of the most sought after economies in the world. Employers from all over the world – America, Australia, Europe and China – come to IndiaFreelancers.com to hire tech talent because they have come to know the excellence and quality that is found in India and the tremendous value that comes from hiring a technological expert in India.

Freelancers and mobile phones: Used iPhones in India

In a further example of India’s growing strength and importance on the world stage as far as electronics are concerned Apple, the electronics giant company, has applied for permission to the government of India to import and sell pre-owned iPhones in India.

On the surface this seems like a great idea. India would have the ability to buy one of the world’s most popular mobile telephones for a discounted price. However, if we look at other considerations we see that, as is the case in life, there are other thoughts which come into this. For example, last year Apple applied for a similar permission from the government to import one lakh of used iPhones and 2.5 lakh of used iPads but the Technical Review Committee (TRC) of the Environment Ministry turned down this application by the tech giant  on July 2, 2016 citing concerns that it would add to India’s e-waste.

In its decision to turn down Apple’s request last year, the TRC argued that refurbished electrical and electronic equipment (also known as EEEs) have a shorter functional life and became obsolete quicker. A shorter half life, therefore, means that these devices will find themselves as being waste much sooner than new devices. The concern therefore, understandably, is that these devices with their shorter half life would potentially substantially amplifying the country’s e-waste burden. Furthermore, the TRC reasoned that it would view favorably imports of EEEs which were less than three year old and had at least five years of residual life.

All of the above does make sense. One of the main functions of our government is to protect us. If these devices by Apple will strongly add to India’s electronic waste burden, then we should think twice before allowing them into the country. On the other hand, India is rapidly joining the world stage as a major economy and a major player on the world’s stage. Thus, it would be desirable for us in India to have increased access to one of the world’s most popular mobile telephones.

We at IndiaFreelancers.com will continue to watch and monitor these events for you. Regardless of the outcome of these negotiations and thoughts one thing is certain: tech titans like Apple and others worldwide are paying closer and closer attention to India – and to our tech capacities. Our IndiaFreelancers would do well to follow this situation carefully and learn to code for the Apple platform. New or Pre-Owned, Apple iPhones are on their way to our country and we at IndiaFreelancers.com should do our best to be ready.

Freelancers: Cooperative Work Spaces

February 9, 2016

In a recent article on the QZ website (April 15, 2015) it was noted not so much that Freelancers can work effectively – this is a given – but where they do their wonderful work is the interesting question.

I am sure that most of us imagine the joy of Freelancing: working in our slippers and/or our pajamas at home with a nice warm cup of tea or coffee at our side – perhaps looking through the window to a cold and windy day smugly knowing that we do not have to go out in that weather. Oh the joys of Freelancing!

But what happens when we get a little tired of our home surroundings? Well to that end there are a growing number of what are called “Cooperative Work Spaces.” These are places where Freelancers can go to be with other Freelancers and mingle. These are places where humans can have the joy of interacting with other humans. The joy of exchanging ideas and “bouncing things off” a fellow programmer or a fellow writer.

In Mumbai for example, on a nice cobblestone street in the city of Khar in Mumbai, there is a quaint place known as “the Hive” where Freelancers can go, mingle, get work done and enjoy the company of fellow Freelancers.

We at www.IndiaFreelancers.com hope that our Freelancers will indeed take advantage of these “Cooperative Work Spaces” and mingle with others of their same persuasion. By so doing, our Freelancers can enjoy the camaraderie that comes with being with others who think – and dream – as we do.

So feel free to work at home in your bunny slippers and comfy bathrobe, but when the “bug” hits you to share space and time with other Freelancers, think of these “Cooperative Work Spaces” which are popping up all over the place and which give you a chance to get out and be with others.

Freelancers: Success comes from trial and error

February 6, 2016
IndiaFreelancers

In a recent article in 1stWebDesigner (February 27, 2015), a story is told of how three Freelancers learned the lessons taught by the early failures and eventually succeeded. This is a heartwarming story that is so often repeated among those of us who listen to the call of risk taking and starting our own ventures. My father used to say that “You cannot with a soccer match from the sidelines” by which he meant that you actually have to get into the game and play – if you want to have a chance to lose. The unfortunate flip side to this, however, is that if you get into the game, you also have a chance to lose.

The ability to lose and to learn from one’s losses is a key difference between those of us who feel the tug of entrepreneurship on our hearts and those who are content to work for someone else their whole lives. There is nothing wrong with working for someone else one’s whole life. It is safe, predictable, quiet and – hopefully – without too much turmoil. My uncle lived his whole life in the same apartment building and in the same second floor apartment and recently passed away there. He worked at the same position for almost 60 years, in the same company. As far as I can tell, he was happy doing so – and my heart goes out to him.

I, on the other hand, would have felt suffocated, unrealized and stifled. There is a story about a man who is at a friend’s funeral and someone asks him when the deceased passed away. The man answers that the deceased “passed away yesterday but he died many years ago.” For me, working in the same place without having the ability to spread my wings and try for the elusive “brass ring” of trying something new and starting my own company would be to be like the man who passed away recently but died many years ago.

These are the things which we allow others to have on www.IndiaFreelancers.com. On our website people can start to spread their entrepreneurial wings and try to develop their companies. They can grow with the start that we give them on IndiaFreelancers.com. Take a look, for example, to the video of Ranjiv (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GUSb_pKojsk) who started his own web design company and who succeeded thanks to www.IndiaFreelancers.com

In summary, we need to follow our hearts. If that heart pulls you in the direction of possibly trying to start your own company, then IndiaFreelancers.com may help you to get where you hope to go.

A recent Forbes Magazine article (June 28, 2013) highlights three different yet similar success stories of people who engaged in Freelancer activities as a way to achieve a flexibility in their lives which a normal 9-to-5 job could never provide.

The story highlights a couple who enjoyed travelling and used the income achieved freelancing in order to be able to finance their travels. Other similar success stories are as well well highlighted. This is the type of lifestyle success that www.IndiaFreelancers.com brings to the growing tech community of India.

It seems that every day there is one more website which brings together an employer seeking to hire a programmer or web developer and a Freelancer who is willing to work and make the project a reality. The growth of the Freelancer society is such that a recent article in JobMob (November 29, 2015) counted as many as 50 – yes 50 – websites dedicated to bringing together an employer and a Freelancer.

So how does www.IndiaFreelancers.com stand out in such a crowded field? Well, www.IndiaFreelancers.com provides both employers and Freelancers a free-to-join platform which allows them the freedom to hire whomever they wish and work as little or as much as they wish and still achieve their dreams. IndiaFreelancers.com is the only website with YouTube videos both for employers = (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FxbtRP0nXx8) and for Freelancers = (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GUSb_pKojsk) which explain exactly what the Freelancer and Employer relationship is and how it works.

So when thinking of a Freelancers type of website among the many such websites, please visit the YouTube videos mentioned above and easily learn more about the relationship and its benefits.
